Book Review: Self Leadership and The One Minute Manager
By: Ken Blanchard, Susan Fowler, and Laurence Hawkins
Review by: Kenzie Bertrand
The Premise:Ken Blanchard, Susan Fowler, and Laurence Hawkins deliver an accessible framework for individual empowerment in Self-Leadership and the One Minute Manager. Framed through a relatable business parable following an ambitious employee named Steve, the narrative exposes the common trap of waiting for leadership to hand down clear directions or tailored guidance. The core theme centers on proactive self-leadership: taking complete ownership of your professional path, acquiring necessary direction, and eliminating perceived helplessness during times of change. The authors outline three crucial skills: challenging assumed constraints, activating points of power, and negotiating for one-touch direction and support. The flow is conversational and fast-paced, breaking complex behavioral concepts into practical, everyday tools. Readers glean a pragmatic strategy to diagnose their own development gaps, ask for targeted feedback, and navigate unfamiliar organizational territory with confidence.
The Bottomline:I chose this book because I was looking for a practical framework to manage my own learning curve and take greater ownership of my career progression. When stepping into new initiatives or unfamiliar business territory, it is easy to default to waiting for formal training or explicit permission to take the lead. Blanchard’s focus on “challenging assumed constraints” hit home immediately. In my current role, I realized how often I was imposing limits on my own initiative simply because a domain felt complex or outside my core comfort zone. My favorite concept is negotiating for leadership styles: recognizing when you need high direction on new concepts versus high support on execution, and explicitly asking your manager or team for that exact style of guidance. Applying this mindset in my daily work transformed how I approach cross-functional projects – allowing me to drop self-doubt, ask sharper questions, and build momentum in real time.
Recommendation
Recommended for professionals navigating changing environments, emerging managers, and anyone stepping into unfamiliar territory who wants to break through self-imposed limits and proactively drive their own career growth.
