There’s an expression: if you’re the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room. My provocation is what if you’re in the right room but you’re looking at the wrong things in order to judge what is ‘smart.’ I’ve observed many ‘smart’ people dismiss the ideas of others because they don’t have the right (fill in the blank) degree, pedigree, work experience, life experience, etc. You’ll talk to them about an idea and they’ll quickly dismiss it because you don’t ‘understand’ what they mean. One of the keys to career longevity, from my perspective, is the willingness to stay curious and open-minded to new and different points of view. So, maybe, you’re not in the wrong room… maybe, you just need to get a little more curious about what’s been said in that room. You just might learn something.
