#leadershiptruth – #winning can be losing.

When I was younger, there wasn’t a battle that I wasn’t ready to fight. If I felt passionately about something, I would go ‘all in’ on making my case. The problem when you like to ‘win’ is that you always want to ‘win’ and that’s not necessarily a good thing. I got a reputation for being a bit of a hothead and someone who was pushy with my own agenda. Of course, I didn’t see it that way. I just thought I was right and everyone else was missing the point. Here’s the thing: maybe sometimes I was right, but other times my drive to win my corner would make me less open to hearing other people’s perspectives and, that was a loss for me on a couple of fronts: one, I didn’t hear ideas that were probably better than mine; and two, I built a reputation for being a bit stubborn in my views which in turn stopped people from even bringing the ideas up in the first place. Don’t take winning too far or else it can become losing.
