One of the greatest things I gained from doing advance coach training was the insight that most problems are simply the tip of the iceberg. What’s below the surface is where the real issues lie. Tip of the iceberg stuff are things like: chronic lateness, working overtime continuously, stress leaves, crying over getting feedback, sloppy work habits. The stuff that lies below the surface are the motivators, values, beliefs and mindsets that drive these surface behaviours and change isn’t going to happen until you get under the covers. I once had an impatient manager tell me that ‘you need a degree in psychology to be a leader today’. I don’t disagree. We are squarely in the age of collaboration. It’s a time when we are working more frequently with conceptual ideas and need to work in teams and together to solve problems. We all bring our respective baggage to the party. Leaders need to be comfortable digging below the surface to get to the underlying issues within individuals and teams to make things happen. #leadershiptruth
