Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about the whole idea of ‘blissful’ work and that dumb phrase ‘if you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life.’ Well, I do DO what I love, and I can tell you with full transparency that there are some days that I’m cruising the job ads because the thought of grinding it out to make payroll just really isn’t all that appealing to me at that particular moment in time. I can tell you that this usually happens on the days when I’ve received a notice from the CRA, or when a key person resigns, or when I’ve got to try and write a proposal for something when I’d rather just get our team started on doing the work. Here’s the thing: we all have part of our jobs that are our least favourite parts. We all have things that we just have to ‘suck it up, buttercup’ and get done. Nobody’s work is a constant skip through the daisies. Personally, I aim for 80% bliss at work on a regular basis and that feels pretty reasonable. If you’re averaging less than that, then maybe it’s time to start making some different choices. Life is too short to be miserable on a regular basis and loving what you do can help you navigate the inevitable bumps in the road so that you can suck it up and keep going.
