One of the biggest challenges in motivating people, as I see it, is that we’re in a crazy world where what seemed achievable on paper at the start of the year can quickly disintegrate a few months into the year. I know very few organizations that ever go back to revise budgets based on new information which, in my opinion, is a problem. We’re locked into an annual method of setting targets and have built intricate compensation systems around them. Meanwhile, we talk about operating in a VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous) world. If the world is so out of whack, how is it possible to set static budgets and targets? No wonder people are discouraged and burnt out 2 months into their fiscal. It’s time to rethink how we set targets and motivate people through compensation to achieve them, don’t you think?
