I get asked a lot about what it takes to build a successful business. For me, it’s about figuring out your niche and then filling it with excellence. It’s no different for your career. To have a successful career, you need to continuously focus on two things: where you shine (what you’re great at) and what makes you shine (what juices you up). Being great at something isn’t enough. You need to feel passion and excitement to generate the momentum you’ll need to keep you going through the inevitable ups and downs of your career.
Too many of us get the misplaced advice early on that we need to focus on jobs that pay big money so that we have ‘security’. Aiming for security isn’t something that’s going to keep you secure. When you are ‘good enough’ at your job, but don’t add the extra value that comes from being passionate about that job, you’re at risk. The best job security comes from doing what you love and doing it better than anybody else.
What makes you shine from the inside out?
