One of the earliest jobs I had was at a small charity where my ‘team’ was all volunteers. I am so thankful for that role as it gave me the foundation to learn how to influence and persuade people to do things that they weren’t being paid to do. As organizations get flatter and silos continue to get demolished, the ability to influence others to support your agenda is truly a non-negotiable and – in my observation – a differentiator for high potential leaders. One of the best ways I think you can build your influence muscle is to get involved in a charity. The multiple agendas and varied backgrounds of board and committee members will give you ample opportunity to learn how to influence and persuade others. Give it a try.
