#leadershiptruth – Everybody is struggling.

One of the observations I have from running our Roundtable group coaching programs is that peer coaching is part leadership development and part group therapy. One of the universal experiences that all leaders go through is a feeling of isolation. As soon as you step into a leadership role, you are essentially removing yourself from your peer group. Each move up the ladder provides one more move towards loneliness. As you look around at your leadership peers, it’s easy to assume that everyone else has their shit together and you’re the only ‘loser’ who’s struggling. The reality is, we’re all struggling. Today’s world is complex, ambiguous and uncertain. There is no script for what’s happening and rather than isolating ourselves by putting up the veneer of ‘I’ve got this,’ there is strength in sharing our challenges with others. When we share our struggles, we find out we’re not alone and, 9 times out of 10, we’ll find out that others have lived through the same things and have some suggestions on what we can do to pull ourselves through to the other side.
