In my own experience leading for the last 25 years, I can attest to the fact that your top talent or ‘A’ players do tend to drive 60 to 80% of your results. The myth that most leaders succumb to is the view that they can leave their ‘A’ players to just run with things. This couldn’t be further from the truth. ‘A’ players are demanding … maybe not outwardly, but if you’re not paying attention they’ll be the first ones to walk when they’re disengaging … they know they are marketable and have places to go. ‘A’ players need your attention. They require constant challenge. Their learning timelines are shorter so they can get bored easily and need to be given new ways to grow. And I get that all of this can be exhausting. But remember … replacing an ‘A’ player is a bigger pain in the ass than managing their rapidly growing needs. Invest the time to keep them engaged and growing.
