#leadershiptruth – 80% is managing the drama.

My colleague Angela introduced me to the concept that being an entrepreneur is 10% strategy, 10% execution and 80% managing the drama. True for entrepreneurs and equally true for leaders. I’ve observed that 80% of where we spend our energy and attention is on the things that go on in our heads: “is my boss out to get me? Will I get that promotion? Man, I screwed up that presentation – there goes my next opportunity!” It’s all drama! Think about where your thinking energy went over the last hour. How much of it was about judging yourself or judging other people? How much of your thinking was actually based on strategy or execution? The more you can minimize the internal drama, the happier and more productive you’ll be. The first step to change is to start tuning in to how often you do it. From there, you’ll be able to create a plan to change.
