The Premise: Lilly Singh is an actress, comedian, and YouTube sensation (aka, Superwoman!). How to Be a Bawse: A Guide to Conquering Life is filled with 50 chapters of advice and wisdom told through a humorous, colourful lens. Lilly Singh takes us through her journey of lessons learned, tips and tricks to conquering life and becoming a bawse. The book is broken up into four parts… Master Your Mind, Hustle Harder, Make Heads Turn and Be A Unicorn.
For anyone wondering, “What is a bawse?!” … Lilly defines a bawse as “a person who exudes confidence, reaches goals, gets hurt efficiently, and smiles genuinely because they’ve fought through it all and made it out the other side.” To be honest, this book didn’t surprise me in any way. But it was filled with some real-life examples of common struggles, which I think all readers can relate to in one way or another. I found most of the advice was “do this!” and didn’t provide much context on HOW to achieve it. Regardless, it was opportunity to reflect and relate to some areas that I personally try to challenge myself in, in both a personal and professional setting.
The Bottomline: I would say the most interesting part about the book was gaining some personal insight to Lilly’s life and her candid experiences rising to fame. The book is a quick and simple read and it doesn’t include any lucky charms or cute quotes, which I can appreciate. I’d recommend this book to the younger generation who watched Lilly (or Superwoman) on YouTube. It was neat to view her in a different light. The graphics and colours in the book are beautiful – I’d recommend the hardcover copy.
