The Leadership Merit Badge Challenge: How have you earned your stripes?

Studies show that most employees don’t feel recognized enough and that leaders don’t do a particularly stellar job at providing recognition on a regular basis. But, we ask, who’s recognizing leaders? Ask anyone who’s been in business for over 25 years and they’ll tell you this: leadership today is far more complex and demanding than it’s ever been.

Isn’t it time we acknowledge the hard won lessons learned and efforts made by leaders at all levels? After all, we know that when people are recognized, their engagement increases and that translates into cold hard cash on the bottom-line (according to a study done by Towers Watson, engagement produced a 9.3% higher return for shareholders).

Remember back in Scouts or Girl Guides how you did things and received a merit badge for the new skills you’d mastered? We’ve decided to create a series of merit badges just for leaders. And we’re looking for your help. Send us your ideas and the winning entries will be featured in a series of badges for our 2017 Leadership Week (May 1 to 5).

For example, how many of you have successfully achieved the Herding Cats Award for corralling differing opinions in order to hit a deadline?herding cats REV 3

Complete our online survey to share with us your ideas using our simple formula. Our crack design team will take your ideas and bring them to life.

Tips to creating a good badge:

1) Keep your badge title short and snappy – 2 to 5 words maximum

2) Award descriptions should be no more than one sentence and clearly describe the award

3) Use power verbs that pack a punch (see examples in Merit Badge application)

4) Have fun. The Leadership Merit Badge campaign is for all the things that leaders do that they never get credit for surviving. Think of all the things you didn’t know you were getting into when you signed up to become a leader.

Deadline for entry of ideas is April 14th. Watch May 1st when winning merit badges start getting released. You’ll be able to tag a well deserving leader and share some love.

Happy leading!
